Which should we follow? Heart or Mind?

It was an old saying “Nasa taas ng puso ang utak para isip muna ang paganahin.” But it’s also ironic that we are still trying to question the existence of artificial intelligence. AI’s were rational, reliable, always states the fact, and it was programmed to do exactly just what we ONLY want to hear and see.

If that’s the case then, what about uniqueness? If we will be surrounded by a standard, programmed and strictly rational minds, how could we differentiate the people we are talking or being with to?

Would it give us contentment?

Would it make a more peaceful environment?

Would it make us happier?

One thing for sure, there will be no more heartbreaks, wrong decisions, nothing that will make us regret or feel empty anymore. It’s quite idealistic isn’t it? No more reason to cry, to feel lonely, angry or anything that makes us hate being a person.

However, I believe that both our hearts and minds were made for a purpose. Yes, we both need it. It balances the world and the life we are living in. There are times where no matter how hard we try to think about it, just to make the right decision, it doesn’t work out and from there, our hearts will knock on us wanting to be heard.

Have you experienced that? when you need to choose or decide on something and you’re trying to look at every angle but still, you can’t find the answer. Then another old saying will come up “Kung anong nasa puso mo, sundin mo.” And there it is, suddenly, you made a choice without thinking about it anymore.

Sometimes it feels so good to follow your heart, it’s like winning a lottery or getting that thing you’ve ever wanted since you were a kid that boosts all your emotions up. It’s just that, there is a feeling that your brain could never explain. You feel complete, fulfilled, you feel like you already have everything that you’ve wanted even if you were just 5% ahead in the reality of life.

No matter what the consequences are, you were just so glad that you did something from the bottom of your heart. Which, sometimes leads us to a miserable place. A place where your heart will no longer be helpful but here comes your brain making you realize that what your heart have decided was a complete mistake.

Then, the old saying will come up to you again, “Nasa taas ng puso ang utak para isip muna ang paganahin.” Suddenly, everything that you believed in will vanish. All those things your heart taught you will become a lie. But that’s fine, I guess that’s really how it goes.

As time passes by, I realized that I have to quit thinking that following my heart first will be the best thing to do and just let my mind help me to get through things when it gets rough. Right now, I would say that it may be a process? First, let your mind focus and assess what you’re being through and let it decide what would be the proper and right way to do. Then let your heart feel the victory of obeying what’s best for you and everyone else. In that way, you could still feel the fulfillment and it will still make you feel complete.

In the first place, having God in your heart, it will always be humble. Humble enough to give up what it really likes, listen and follow to what’s right so that you’re not the only one who can achieve that “winning a lottery” feeling. Loving enough to think of what will make everyone happy 🙂

How about you? Which do you follow mostly? Are you always confused like I was before?
